Student Rights and Discipline
Bracewell provides counsel to educational institutions in a broad range of issues concerning the rights of students, and appropriate disciplinary measures when students run afoul of school policies or legal statutes. We advise school districts, colleges and universities on matters involving discrimination, sexual harassment, free speech and religion in the schools. We help develop and communicate policies and disciplinary procedures to administration, teachers, instructors, school aides and volunteers, and students.
We design and deliver customized legal workshops for school board members, superintendents, principals and other key leaders, in which we help clients review current policies and procedures in light of existing and emerging legal requirements. Our attorneys assist academic institutions with compliance issues raised by Title IX, the ADA, the USA PATRIOT ACT, FERPA, the Rehabilitation Act and HIPAA. We also represent educational institutions in litigation brought by students and in investigations conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and other federal and state agencies.
