Stan Chelney’s practice involves a broad range of complex commercial litigation in federal and state courts, as well as before U.S. and international arbitration panels. He has experience litigating actions alleging breach of contract, fraud, various business torts, breach of fiduciary duties, RICO claims, malpractice and professional negligence claims, lender liability, securities claims, and constitutional law. He represents clients in numerous industries, including financial services, energy, sports, real estate, insurance, accounting, health care, and telecommunications. Mr. Chelney is experienced in internal investigations, electronic discovery, motion practice, mediation and trial.
Before joining Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, Mr. Chelney was a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.
Recent representative engagements on behalf of financial institutions include:

Securing a $100 million arbitration award for a major international bank in an action concerning a negotiated risk transfer agreement.

Assisting a hedge fund to foreclose on collateral under a secured credit facility and in litigation to protect the value of its collateral.

Representing an international investment bank in two residential mortgage backed securities (RMBS) actions against monocline insurers.

Serving as national coordinating counsel on litigation affecting an investment portfolio of distressed life settlement assets.

Representing a real estate private equity fund in an insurance coverage dispute relating to environmental claims.

Representing an investment bank in civil actions and government investigations relating to tax shelter products offered by the bank.

Acting as lead litigation counsel for a professional soccer league and its member teams in an arbitration against a rival soccer league.

Advising a professional soccer club in a breach of contract action against a former business partner.

Representing the minority owners of a Major League Baseball club in an arbitration against the club’s General Partner concerning control of the franchise and damages arising from the team’s relocation.

Representing the professional football and basketball players associations in grievances over player suspensions and compensation and in collective bargaining negotiations.

Representing the independent directors of a publicly listed company in the landmark Trenwick America case before the Delaware Chancery Court.
