Firm Sponsors Law School Scholarship Promoting A Diverse Workforce
July 9, 2008
HOUSTON (July 9, 2008) — Bracewell & Giuliani LLP sponsors the LSAT Preparation Diversity Scholarship, awarded by The University of Texas School of Law’s Thurgood Marshall Legal Society (TMLS). The scholarship is designed to address a lack of resources required to attend costly LSAT preparatory classes by students from diverse backgrounds.
Several years ago, when Bracewell summer associate Ashlie Alaman set her sights on law school, an Austin attorney gave her a good tip – attend an LSAT preparatory review course. He also gave her the $1,300 needed to pay for the course. Ms. Alaman is helping to give the same opportunity to other students through the TMLS and the generosity of Bracewell and the Princeton Review. During the TMLS annual banquet in March, eight racially and ethnically diverse students were awarded the LSAT Preparation Diversity Scholarship which will provide full funding for the Princeton Review LSAT Prep course.
“Bracewell not only committed to funding the scholarships, but also but helped me with the legwork required in launching this program,” said Ms. Alaman, who is now a summer clerkwith the firm. “This act of generosity reflects the firm’s commitment to helping those who often underrepresented in the legal community.”
Ms. Alaman worked closely with Bracewell attorney Kim Cunningham to develop the scholarship program and was deeply impressed by Bracewell’s commitment as a sponsor. Bracewell not only matched the Princeton Review’s two-scholarship commitment, but surpassed it, choosing to sponsor four additional scholarships for a total of eight.
“Bracewell is committed to increasing diversity at the firm and in the legal arena as a whole. We are honored to play an important role in this scholarship program with our friends at the University of Texas, a school which has produced many of our attorneys,” said Ms. Cunningham.
