A resident of the Middle East for more than 40 years and a resident of Dubai for 25, David M. Stockwell draws on his extensive professional and governmental experience to provide effective legal counsel to companies doing business in the region. Mr. Stockwell represents United States and United Arab Emirates based companies as well as multinational corporations in all areas of commercial and corporate law, commercial and construction arbitration, and regulation of business in Dubai. He also provides guidance to numerous Middle Eastern clients with respect to their global business concerns.
Mr. Stockwell has spent many years in diplomatic service. Trained in Arabic at the Foreign Service Institute, he held the positions of Commercial Attaché at the United States Embassy in Kuwait and of Country Officer for Bahrain, Qatar and the U.A.E. at the State Department in Washington, D.C. In 1985, after three years of service as the senior U.S. diplomat in Dubai and the Northern Emirates of the U.A.E., Mr. Stockwell resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service and remained in Dubai, where he maintains his legal practice. In 1990, Mr. Stockwell acquired the Dubai assets and staff of the firm of Bryan Cave, and continued to extend his practice under the name of Stockwell & Associates, before joining Bracewell & Giuliani.
Mr. Stockwell is an integral part of the legal, business and civic communities in Dubai. He has served as Vice President of Legal Affairs/Secretary, Executive Vice President and President of the Board of the American Business Council, the American Chamber of Commerce in Dubai. In 1999, he was elected Chairman of the American Business Council of the Gulf Countries, the regional group of the nine American Chambers of Commerce in the Arabian Gulf. He became Chairman Emeritus of that organization in January 2001. Mr. Stockwell is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American School of Dubai, a not-for-profit K-12 private school serving the American community in Dubai.
