The single greatest challenge to growth of Cleantech and Renewable Energy is its inability to compete with traditional energy sources without subsidies or market preferences. If these technologies cannot surmount transitional economic challenges, can they ever become a “mainstream” component of the maturing energy sector? This program will assess the key challenges and some alternatives for addressing them.

Points of discussion for this month's teleconference include:

  • How do the business economics of “cap-and-trade” carbon regulation and RECs mesh with the “right-scaling” of Cleantech and Renewable Energy companies and projects?
  • How do the system planning rules of FERC and of the RTOs comport with the introduction and achievement of economic scale of Renewables and Cleantech?
  • Does the “monetization” of regulatory economic incentives facilitate “right scaling” of Cleantech and Renewable Energy companies and projects?
  • What is the most economically efficient basis for creating and allocating RECs and carbon emission credits?
