On Tuesday, May 18, Bracewell Attorneys Cheri Hoff, Renée Dailey and Genna Garver led a panel discussion titled, "Heightened Regulation and Dissolution of Systemically Risky Institutions." The panel, the 202nd Education Session held by 100 Women in Hedge Funds (100WHF), focused on financial regulatory reform. Our panelists tackled the issues and standards surrounding "systemically risky" firms in the current economic climate.
The event was well attended by hedge fund representatives and offered practical insight on what funds should know about the new systemic risk regulatory regime and how it could impact their funds.
Ms. Hoff, panel moderator, noted that "the speakers [including Ms. Dailey and Ms. Garver] were engaging and the question and answer session following the panel was spirited." Ms. Hoff also noted that the lively audience participation may be an indicator of how strongly people in the industry feel about the impact of financial regulation on hedge funds.
According to Ms. Dailey, "the panel provided a forum for an interactive discussion on the impact of the increased regulation on hedge funds, as well as the treatment of investor-creditors in the dissolution of a systemically risky firm."
100WHF is a leading non-profit organization for professionals in the alternatives industry. This was not Bracewell's first collaboration with 100WHF. After reading an article in FinAlternatives, the organization invited the author, Ms. Garver, to speak at an event in New York in October 2009. Ms. Garver has participated in the organization ever since, attending events and actively aiding the members of the education committee.
When asked about Bracewell's future with 100WHF, Ms. Garver reported that 100WHF is working with Bracewell to plan more events with both the Connecticut and New York chapters. Ms. Dailey, Ms. Garver and Ms. Hoff see continued involvement in this organization as a positive avenue for Bracewell attorneys to be involved in facilitating the continuing discussions with women on issues in the alternatives industry.
