On June 6, 2010 Bracewell & Giuliani Partner Evan Flaschen completed his seventh Bike MS 100 event in Windsor, Connecticut. This event was hosted by the Connecticut Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Mr. Flaschen was the top event participant fundraiser this year with $71,401, bringing his total fundraising amount over the past several years to more than $250,000. There were a total of 209 donations made to his ride, from all over America, as well as international donations from numerous countries such as England, China, Australia, and Canada.
Mr. Flaschen was put to the test this year with weather forecasts declaring thunder, lightning and heavy rain showers. Even though there were no lightning strikes, heavy rain and thunder made the ride more challenging. "The weather was unbelievable," said Flaschen, who at the end of his ride, in spite of the conditions, posted his best personal average speed of 17.5 miles per hour.
When asked about his reasoning behind participating in this event, Mr. Flaschen simply stated, "I enjoy riding my bicycle and it is for a good cause because everybody knows somebody with MS."
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, as of 2010, hosts over 100 rides around the country. The first ride started in 1980 and now 30 years later, the National MS Society has raised over $600 million. Each ride is a two-day bicycle ride with an average of 100 miles and an overnight campout halfway through the journey. All of the money raised is donated to the National MS Society to fund research for a cure for MS, as well as support for the many people suffering from this disease worldwide. Currently, there are around 350,000 individuals in the United States who have multiple sclerosis.
